Been There Seen That Done That

In The Grampians

Excerpt From A Journey To The Land Of Oz

By Rodney Harris

We reach Halls Gap village nestled in the Grampians
Shops selling australiana, ice creams and provisions.
But all the tourists flock here and the car parks now compete
With a frontier settlement where man and nature meet.
Yet it still has that outpost feel and it's well worth the visit.
It's a good place for reaching out…. much nearer to your limit.

And thus it is we now embark on the Mount Victoria Road
(In Visitors Information, a good short cut we have been told).
We then pick up the turning, for the Asses Ears Track…
And when of course we've started, there is no turning back.

To say this is an unsealed road is a small exaggeration
This rufous track of earth and rock requires much concentration.
We pass an Emu rushing by…as if in mortal fear.
We ford two creeks and then (no worries), the road signs disappear!

But our navigator holds her nerve; we rely on broad direction.
We make the Henty Highway ……. and have a quiet celebration.

Back to Done That...

We really like the people who send in their stories and poems. Their views are always worth listening to. Sometimes they might differ from that of Explore, but that's okay because the world is an interesting place and we like to discover and talk about it, even if we don't agree. Just so you know.
