Adventure Holidays in Antarctica

Heading back to the cruise ship

A true adventure holiday waits for you in Antarctica. Be prepared to have your breath taken away by the spectacular sight of the Antarctic Peninsula as you follow in the footsteps of some of the world's greatest explorers - Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen - on one of our expedition cruises to Antarctica.

There may be no indigenous human population in this hostile environment but wildlife can be found. Penguins and albatrosses are the birds most associated with Antarctica, but it is petrels, prions, fulmars and shearwaters that make up most of the species inhabiting the Great White Continent. Sea life include whales, seals, squid and fish; the Nototheniid fish that live close to the ice have developed a glycoprotein antifreeze in their body fluids to stop them from freezing.

Prepare to be amazed on one of our expedition cruises to Antarctica.

Cruises in Antarctica

The Antarctic Classic cruise takes you across the Drake Passage, over the Antarctic Convergence to the Antarctic Peninsula. Zodiac boats let you explore land and sea where you may get a close encounter with a whale. Depending on conditions and the Captain's decision places to visit include Pendulum Cove for a dip in the hot springs, the old British base and museum at Port Lockroy, and the ruins of a whaling station in Whaler's Bay.

Spirit of Shackleton is a longer cruise, which includes visits to the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. We follow Shackleton's route in reverse, south towards Elephant Island, then onto the Antarctic Peninsula. South Georgia is home to an abundance of wildlife, including King Penguins and Antarctic fur seals, as well as being the site of Shackleton's grave.

These cruises in Antarctica can also be linked up to some of our holidays in South America, such as Adventures in Patagonia, Voyage Through the Patagonian Andes and the Torres del Paine Circuit. Contact us to find out more.

Responsible travel in Antarctica

As you are probably aware, the Antarctic is one of the world's most sensitive environments. On-board specialists in marine and avian biology, geology, local history, wildlife and anthropology will provide various talks and presentations that give an in-depth insight into this unique land.

We are also pleased to let you know that the operator of the cruise ships we use has established its own charitable foundation to support local projects and is a member of the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO). IATTO was founded in 1991 to advocate, promote and practice safe and environmentally responsible private sector travel to the Antarctic.
