Adventure Holidays in Croatia

Like many places, Croatia has been invaded and ruled over by other countries and empires over the years, from the Romans to France. Given republic status within the Yugoslav federation after WWII, Croatia declared its independence from the federation in 1991 and Serbian Krajina declared its independence from Croatia leading to several years of civil war. Fortunately, Croatia is peaceful once again and a fascinating country to visit.

The stunning Dalmatian coastline stretches down most of the Adriatic Sea and is dotted with over a thousand islands. Split and Dubrovnik are the two place names that tend to crop up, but believe us, there are plenty more places to explore on holiday in Croatia. Discover more about this country on one of our holidays in Croatia.

Walking and cycling holidays in Croatia

Plitvice Lakes National Park/Jackie Mullen

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Go On Foot in Croatia on our two-centred walking holiday, exploring the coast and lakes. Your first base is Starigrad-Paklenica from where you will go walking along the coastline and in Paklenica National Park, which lies on the southern edge of the Velebit Mountains. With karst landscapes, plunging gorges and jagged peaks the park has plenty of scenery to admire. Wildlife lovers can look out for deer, chamois, wild boar and long-eared owls. Plitvice Lakes National Park is your second centre on this walking holiday, from where you can hike to the magnificent calcium lakes. Natural dams that separate the lakes have been formed by mineral deposits from the sedimentation of calcium carbonate and the work of special kinds of moss and algae.

Try a cycling holiday in Croatia with a bit of a difference. Rather than cycle to a different town and hotel each night, stay on board a traditional boat that will take you to different islands and coastal towns. Our Cycle & Cruise Croatia cycling holiday takes you to the historic city of Dubrovnik; Mijet where legend has it that Odysseus and the nymph Calypso spent their time together; Korcula, believed to be the birthplace of Marco Polo; Sipan, the largest of the Elafiti islands; and Cavtat that was founded by the Greeks in 3rd century BC.

Cultural and cruise holidays in Croatia

The stunning Dalmatian coast

The stunning Dalmatian coast

If you're not feeling that energetic, explore Old Dubrovnik & Dalmatia with the odd walk thrown in on our cultural holiday in Croatia. Wander around Dubrovnik and Split drinking in the history - see the world's oldest Roman Catholic church, which started out as the mausoleum of the pagan Roman Emperor Diocletian, in Split. Walk the well-marked trails in Plitvice Lakes National Park and visit the ruins of the Roman Forum, dating from 2nd century BC, at Zadar, the ancient capital of Dalmatia.

For those who like to cruise along, join our Dalmatian Island Cruise holiday on board a traditional wooden sailboat. Stop offs include Hvar Island with its 15th century Franciscan monastery; Mijet and its national park; and Vis with Greek and Roman ruins. There will also be opportunities to enjoy some swimming and snorkelling. This cruise holiday can also be combined with our Old Dubrovnik & Dalmatia cultural holiday.

Whilst we concentrate on the Dalmatian coast on our holidays in Croatia, you can visit the capital, Zagreb, on our London to Aqaba railway holiday. The Croatian centre for cultural and political thought since the Middle Ages, Zagreb is a mix of European, Mediterranean and Balkan cultures. Whilst in Zagreb, there is also the option of visiting the town of Samobor, which once rivalled Zagreb as a trade and craft centre in the Middle Ages.

Family holidays in Croatia

Canyoning in Cetina Gorge

Canyoning in Cetina Gorge

An action packed family holiday in Croatia awaits you on our Croatian Active Adventure. Enjoy an exhilarating white-water rafting ride down the Cetina River, go canyoning in the Cetina gorge and travel by sea kayak along the Makarska coast. If you like to be literally climbing the wall, there is the option of a half-day climbing excursion in the mountains.

Alternatively you can Cruise Croatia on your family holiday, stopping off to visit various islands. As well as some exploration you'll take a sea-kayaking trip below the city walls of Dubrovnik and have a windsurfing lesson. Of course, there'll be plenty of opportunities for you and your water babies to have a swim in the sea.
