Gorilla Watching

Gorilla

Uganda is, without doubt one, of Africa's friendliest and most beautiful nations. It is also home to approximately half of the world's surviving population of Mountain Gorillas.

Contrary to popular belief, gorillas are not ferocious beasts but are actually shy, gentle creatures and highly intelligent. They form strong social bonds within family groups that are led by a silverback. He is the dominant male to whom all other members of the family group defer to and he is the chief protector, defending them against rival silverbacks or human predators.

Bwindi National Park is one of the few places in Africa where you can track these rare and magnificent creatures. Indeed, due to the careful way the gorilla troops are monitored (guides sleep out with them each night so they know where they are the next day) the percentage chance of seeing these magnificent creatures is over 90%.

The gorilla tracking is limited to a daily maximum group size of six people for each habituated gorilla family group. The date of tracking permits is difficult to control even when the permits are pre-booked. As a result you may do your tracking on any one of the days that you are in Bwindi. When not tracking, there is a choice of five different nature trails from one to eight hours in one of the richest reserves of East Africa.

Reaching them in the dense undergrowth can be difficult, but worth the effort. Once you've experienced a face-to-face encounter with these incredible creatures, the memory will stay with you forever!

The key objective on the Gorilla Getaway adventure break is simply to observe mountain gorillas in the wild. A face-to-face encounter with gorillas is without doubt one of the greatest wildlife experiences!

This tour plays a part in helping to preserve the very existence of these magnificent creatures through the payment of gorilla tracking fees. The revenues generated by tourism is vital to the future funding of gorilla research, education of local villagers, anti poaching patrols, provision of park rangers and necessary equipment.
