Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon/Jon McCullen
Carved by the Colorado River over 6 million years, 450km long, 1750m deep and averaging 16km in width, the Grand Canyon is a sight to behold. The natural erosion over the years has led to rocks ranging in age from 230 million years to 2 billion years being exposed. The canyon was populated by paleo hunters 10,000 years ago, then 3,000 to 4,000 years ago by desert archaic people, followed by Puebloans, Cerbats and Southern Paiutes, the Navajo and finally settlers. The Grand Canyon became a national monument in 1908, expanded and upgraded to a National Park in 1919, was joined to Marble Canyon in 1975 and became an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Come and join us on one of our holidays that take in the spectacular, natural phenomenon that is the Grand Canyon. On all of these holidays you have the opportunity to walk a short distance into the canyon, stroll along the rim or take a helicopter flight. In the evening, you may want to end the day with some cutting edge virtual experience, by watching an IMAX film about the history of the Grand Canyon.

Cross some of the USA's wildest places and go hiking in Yosemite and Grand Canyon national parks, amongst others. Highlights of the holiday, apart from the Grand Canyon naturally, include a drive through Death Valley; hiking, mountain biking or rafting in the Arches and Canyonlands national parks; exploring Monument Valley with a Navajo guide; and a visit to the historic ghost town of Bodie that once thrived during the gold-mining era of the mid 1800s.

Our Yosemite & Grand Canyon holiday involves some camping. For those who don't like to 'rough it', we offer a slightly different itinerary that includes all of the highlights above but has hotel accommodation only. Find out more here.

Take in some Americana as you drive along part of the infamous Route 66 on our High Plains Highlights holiday. As well as the Grand Canyon, there are other gorges to marvel at along the way, such as Antelope Canyon - a beautiful, peach-gold coloured, sandstone slot gorge formed by the force of flash floods - in Page and Bryce Canyon with its fairytale rock formations. You can also transport yourself into another world at Las Vegas - take a gondola ride at the Venetian, watch pirates fight at Treasure Island or witness a 'live' volcanic eruption.

A free day at Lake Powell, the second largest man-made lake in the USA, gives you the opportunity to make a splash. Water babies can go swimming, snorkelling or scuba diving or for those who prefer dry land, why not visit Antelope Canyon or Glen Canyon Dam? See if you can spot Utah prairie dogs, mountain lions and black bears in Bryce Canyon, or roadrunners and golden eagles in Zion National Park.

We offer two variations for this family holiday: either 14 days or 9 days for those who want to go at half term. The longer version includes a longer period in Las Vegas, two days at Lake Powell and an overnight stop at Capitol Reef. Find out more about each holiday here.
