Why the Eastern Med?

Turquoise waters of Greece

Secluded coves and waters of Greece

Because of (where do we start?)… the amazing weather, stunning mountain vistas, truly hospitable people, turquoise seas, the world-beating ancient sites, brilliant food, the sea-kayaking, mud-baths, meetings with nomads, fantastic walking, amazing cities, get-away-from-it-all-ness, castles, boat trips, weird scenery, value for money...

No wonder the ancients fought tirelessly over this eastern end of the Med - even a short one-week visit will show you why. As experts in the region, Explore have one of - if not the - most comprehensive collections of tours to the region. Our most popular trips are, perhaps unsurprisingly, those that feature cruising the clear waters of the Aegean. Both our one-week cruises on the Greek caique and the Turkish gület can be combined with others to form the perfect 2-week break.

We mentioned walking and ancient sites…

Termessos theatre, Turkey

Stunning Termessos theatre, Turkey

Why? Because these two types of popular tours are reason alone to make time for a visit. Our local contacts and experience means we have built up a reputation for offering the very best walk and trek routes, many pioneered by Explore years ago. Choose from:

  • Easy, centre-based rambles - unpack and unwind, as on our trip to North Cyprus
  • Moderate walks to a different night stop every night or so, like on our classic Cretan Rambler
  • Tougher walks - right up to an ascent of biblical Mount Ararat, crampons and ice axe at the ready, and tread the same hallowed ground as Noah (plus family and creatures), after his ark was finally beached on these hillsides.

Some trips have plenty of opportunity to discover ancient sites. In fact you are almost falling over them wherever you travel in either country! There's Delphi, Ephesus, Aphrodisias and Olympia plus countless others. It's not all about crumbly ruins though…

Making new friends

Spinning cotton with the locals

And we don't just mean your fellow travellers. For many of us, it's the people we meet as much as the sites we see that prompt us to keep on travelling. Karl Bolton, Product Manager for the region says, 'I can safely say that what makes a trip for me is the people I meet. In time, the memory of the sites we see can fade, but that impromptu game of football against the local lads in some tiny village somewhere in the Turkish mountains will be remembered long after we return home. I remember one Tour Leader used to carry around a cricket bat and ball, specifically for such moments. Just brilliant!'

To be honest there is so much to experience we can't possibly do it justice in this introduction - so click away and check out a few of our trips to this fabulous region. We're pretty sure that you'll be inspired to join us on what might just be the best holiday you've ever had!
