Adventure Holidays in Italy

A country of great diversity and fertile land, Italy only became a nation in 1861 following the unification of the City States. Although Venice remained under Austrian control until 1866 and Rome officially joined the unification in 1870. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, what is now Italy was subject to numerous invasions, leading to a unique mix of cultures that remain to this day. Each region has its own identity, dialect (i.e. language) - some village communities on the south east coast and Sicily speak an old form of Greek - and cuisine. In their time, Venice, Genoa and Pisa were great maritime republics and dominated the Mediterranean waters.

Of course, you can't talk about Italy without mentioning volcanoes, which have given the land its fertility. Etna may be the largest active volcano in Europe and one of the most temperamental in the world, but Vesuvius pips it to the post for being the most famous: even though it last cleared its lungs in 1944, it's the eruption of AD79 that earned Vesuvius it's place in history as it froze Herculaneum and Pompeii in time.

Walking holidays in Italy

On the Sardinian trail

On the Sardinian trail

After sampling the cucina locale and unwinding with some wine at the end of each day, you'll need to work it off with a good walk. We offer several walking holidays in Italy, including:

Amalfi & Cilento - follow pathways that wind past meadows of wild flowers and villages clinging precariously to the hillsides along the Amalfi coast and explore the rich natural wonders of Cilento National Park, home to wolves, rare species of birds and some 1800 species of plants.

Mountains of Tuscany - trek in the Apennines and Alpi Apuane for some spectacular views, walking along a medieval trading route and past marble quarries as you bag several peaks. A free day gives you the option to do some more walking or maybe visit Lucca, a jewel of a fortified town forever associated with Puccini and once a Roman colony.

Hidden Trails of Sardinia - walk and explore the contrasting landscapes of this rugged island, never conquered by the Romans, from mountains to beaches. Wind your way through hills cloaked with cork oak forest, scramble up rocky mountains and hike along the coast. Refresh yourself with a dip in the crystal clear waters and maybe take a boat trip along the coast.

Cycling the Tuscan trails

Cycling the Tuscan trails

If you prefer a faster pace, why not try one of our cycling holidays in Italy? Cycle through Veneto from the foothills of the Alps to the coast and the Venice, the 'Sezenissima', passing lush landscape and tiny villages. Sample the visual, cultural and gastronomic delights of this beautiful part of Italy - but take it easy on the grappa!

For a more challenging cycling holiday in Italy Cycle Sardinia. Ride across rugged coastal plains, passing golden beaches and limestone cliffs. You'll also explore villages, Phoenician ruins and the islands of Sant' Antioco and San Pietro, where the dialect of the Genoese is still spoken, centuries after their invasion.

Our Tuscan Trails cycling holiday takes you through classic Tuscan scenery of olive groves and forests of oak and chestnut, interspersed with vineyards. Cycle along a network of backroads lined with cypress trees and fields of vineyards to the Renaissance cities of Florence and Siena. Why not relax at the end of each day with a nice glass of Chianti.

History holidays in Italy

Classic Sicily

Classic Sicily

If you want to discover a bit more about the country's past, we offer two history holidays in Italy.

Classic Campania takes you south from Naples to the Amalfi coast. As well as the legendary sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, you'll visit the sunken volcano of Solfatara, the Cave of Sibyl (one of the most venerated oracles in the Ancient World) and the ancient Greek colony of Paestum.

Discover Ancient Sicily with its Greek temples and Roman cathedrals and palaces. See the Greek theatre hewn out of the hillside where Aeschylus once produced his plays; explore the remarkable complex of 5th century BC Doric temples; and visit the Norman cathedrals of Cefalu and Monreale.

Our guest lecturer, Roger Sharp, an expert in ancient Mediterranean civilisations, accompanies both of these history holidays in Italy.

Family holidays in Italy

Thar she blows!

Thar she blows!

Take your bambini on a family holiday in Italy. Have a Tuscan Active Adventure kayaking on a lake, discovering the countryside and going underground in one of the most complete cave systems in Europe. You'll also have some free time to relax by the pool or explore some more of the surrounding trails, maybe by bike or on a horse.

Alternatively, travel In the Shadow of Vesuvius, exploring ruined cities, volcanoes and beaches. Take the train to Pompeii to visit the famous city that was buried and preserved under ash and pumice almost 2000 years ago and walk to the rim of possibly the world's most famous volcano. Anyone who fancies their self as the next Jamie Oliver can have a go at making pizza or pasta - don't forget the white hats!

See the Best of Italy on a railway holiday that takes you from Venice to Naples, stopping off to admire the many treasures along the way. As well as being iconic for its leaning tower, Pisa is home to a Baptistry, Duomo and Camposant (cemetery), which between them make up a stunning collection of architectural wonders. The focal point of Siena is the Piazza del Campo, which is also used for the famous Palio horse race twice a year when horses and their riders hurtle dangerously around the square. Other delights en route include Rome and Sorrento.
