Journey to Europe's last remaining primeval forest, Bialowieza,
via the
Backroads of Poland. The forest, which straddles Poland and
Belarus and was once a hunting ground for Polish kings and Russian
Tsars, harbours bison, wild boar, lynx and wolf, and you can
explore it on foot or by bike.
To gently break you in to cycling on our
Bison & Borderlands Trail tour you will take a boat ride
down the 'Polish Amazon', otherwise known as the marshland reserve
of Narew National Park, home to more than 200 varieties of birds as
well as beavers, otters, elks and martens.
The wild and sparsely inhabited
Bieszczady Mountains border both Ukraine and Slovakia and form
part of the Eastern Carpathian range. They were completely
depopulated for political reasons in 1945-48 and are now home to
the largest numbers of red deer, wolf and bear in Poland.
On the
High Tatras Trek you may be lucky enough to spot eagles in the
Tatrzanski park. You will also follow in the footsteps of Pope John
Paul II as you trek along the Valley of the Five Lakes, passing
Lake Morskie Oko (Eye of the Sea) with its deep emerald colour.
Passing over the border into Slovakia, the High Tatras are rich in
flora and fauna, with over 1,300 species of plants and the local
wildlife include lynx, marmots, eagles and chamoix.
