Wildlife in Poland

Punting in the Narew National Park / Peter Coombes

Punting in the Narew National Park / Peter Coombes

Journey to Europe's last remaining primeval forest, Bialowieza, via the Backroads of Poland. The forest, which straddles Poland and Belarus and was once a hunting ground for Polish kings and Russian Tsars, harbours bison, wild boar, lynx and wolf, and you can explore it on foot or by bike.

To gently break you in to cycling on our Bison & Borderlands Trail tour you will take a boat ride down the 'Polish Amazon', otherwise known as the marshland reserve of Narew National Park, home to more than 200 varieties of birds as well as beavers, otters, elks and martens.

The wild and sparsely inhabited Bieszczady Mountains border both Ukraine and Slovakia and form part of the Eastern Carpathian range. They were completely depopulated for political reasons in 1945-48 and are now home to the largest numbers of red deer, wolf and bear in Poland.

On the High Tatras Trek you may be lucky enough to spot eagles in the Tatrzanski park. You will also follow in the footsteps of Pope John Paul II as you trek along the Valley of the Five Lakes, passing Lake Morskie Oko (Eye of the Sea) with its deep emerald colour. Passing over the border into Slovakia, the High Tatras are rich in flora and fauna, with over 1,300 species of plants and the local wildlife include lynx, marmots, eagles and chamoix.

Exploring cities by bike or foot

Market Square, Krakow / Maciej Zimowski

Market Square, Krakow / Maciej Zimowski

After cycling in Poland from the Tatras mountains to Slovakia, you will finish the tour in Krakow. The Polish capital until 1596, Krakow survived both World Wars almost unscathed and is home to many architectural treasures, including St Mary's church that contains the world-famous altarpiece carved by Velt Stoss, the medieval buildings of the Jagiellonian University, and Wawel castle and university. Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter, was the setting for the film Schindler's List and Oskar Schindler's factory still resides in one of the suburbs of Krakow.

Recognised as a 'Natural and Cultural World Heritage Treasure', the old town of Warsaw contains several beautiful Gothic churches, the 17th century rust-red royal castle and one of Europe's most beautiful medieval squares. Take your time discovering the majestic sites after exploring the Backroads of Poland.

Short break in Poland

Snowshoeing in Poland

Snowshoeing in Poland

If you like a bit of adventure on holiday, why not try our Polish Winter Adventure short break? Your base is the spa town of Szczawnica, which nestles amongst the beautiful Pieniny Mountains, from where you'll cross the border into Slovakia to walk along part of the Dunajec River in the Pieninski National Park - home to lynx, wolf, stag and some 14 species of bats. Go snowshoeing in the mountains, have a torch-lit sleigh ride and have the option to try snowmobiling, ski-ing or snowboarding. All of this before heading to Krakow via Zakopane and Chocoholow.

Family holidays in Poland

Tobogganing in the Pieniny Mountains

Tobogganing in the Pieniny Mountains

Introduce your children to the delights of Poland on our Mountains & Dragons holiday, from activity adventures in the Pieniny Mountains, such as tobogganing, gentle rafting and cycling, to exploring the history of Krakow. You will also visit the salt mines of Wieliczka, dating back to Middle Ages and still in use, which contains salt sculptures, chapels and monuments amongst the subterranean tunnels and chambers. The centrepiece of the mine is the magnificent Chapel of the Blessed Kings, a cavernous cathedral with altarpieces statues and even chandeliers, all carved from the salt! The church is big enough to accommodate a fair sized congregation and has even held concerts and masses amongst its surreal halls.
