Expedition Voyages

Cruising and cruise voyages might sound a little tame, but our adventure cruise holidays are packed with once-in-a-lifetime experiences, in some of the most remote regions of the world. Our idea of a cruise is to create the most amazing seaborne adventure that you've ever imagined. Cruising through an ice field in an ice-strengthened ship, and meandering along rugged coastlines, fjords and island archipelagos are images that will last forever. Close to land, we intend to stop and spend as much time as possible exploring the local area, either by zodiac or on foot. Here we can discover the amazing diversity of the flora and fauna, and maybe get to some truly remote communities that somehow exist in these harsh conditions.

Why take an adventure cruise?

  • Dream itineraries
  • Access remote regions
  • Small and intimate purpose-built ships
  • Specialist and knowledgeable crew
  • Unique environment and wildlife

The cruise ships that we charter are purpose-built for expeditions in tough polar conditions. Being relatively small ships, their shallow draught means they can enter bays and inlets that are inaccessible to larger vessels.

Considering the locations and climate, our ships are exceptionally comfortable, managed by a knowledgeable and capable crew, who share our passion for adventure and responsible travel. Lectures and talks are arranged in the small onboard lecture theatre, as they pass on their expert knowledge, giving us an insight to these remarkable landscapes. These cruises are the ideal opportunity to relax in truly awe-inspiring scenery.

Cruising Antarctica

Exploring the ice by Zodiac

Exploring the ice by Zodiac

These adventure cruises are special journeys, recreating a bygone age of intrepid sea exploration. The 'Antarctic Classic' takes us across the Drake Passage and into the rich feeding grounds off the Antarctic Peninsula, where we can observe whales and other species. We hope to make two land excursions each day to visit huge wildlife colonies of many different types of seals and penguins. We can also see scientific research stations and abandoned whaling stations.

The 'Spirit of Shackleton' cruise takes us on a longer voyage, which also includes the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, the final resting place of the great Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Cruising Arctic North Atlantic

Norway's stunning fjords

On our 'Norwegian Fjords and Polar Bears' cruise we leave Scotland via the Shetland Islands and head north along the stunning coast of Norway. Tromso is the 'Gateway to the Arctic' and the last major town, before we sail deeper into Arctic waters arriving at Spitsbergen, where we will search for walrus, seal, arctic fox and, of course, the largest land carnivore: the polar bear.

The 'Kingdom of the Polar Bear' cruises around Spitsbergen, deep inside the Arctic Circle, are timed to give us the best chance to see vast ice floes with large seal colonies and magnificent polar bears in their natural habitat. Reindeer and arctic foxes should also be encountered, as well as whales and large colonies of migratory birds.

Remote settlements in Newfoundland

Our 'Celtic Adventure' cruises around the dramatic coastline and islands of Scotland, start in Greenock and return back to Edinburgh. We visit remote settlements that trace their history back thousands of years, and our spring departure means that the sea cliffs are full of noisy gannets, terns, puffins and skuas.

The 'Circumnavigate Newfoundland' is a paradise for any naturalist searching for whale species and starts at the capital St John's. Hugging the spectacular coastline and calling at several small harbours, we hope to see caribou, moose, giant arctic hare and vast colonies of puffins and razor-billed auks. We call at the tip of the Northern Peninsula, where the Norse settlement of L'Anse aux Meadows is the first known European settlement in North America.

Cruising South America

Cruising along the Amazon

These two new cruises in South America could hardly be different. Our 'Patagonia, Pacific Islands and Panama Canal' takes us from the southern icy end of the world at Ushuaia, along the entire spectacular coastline to the tropics of Latin America. There really is something for everyone on this tremendously varied adventure cruise, whether your interest is in history, nature, the environment or even engineering, as we finish by passing through the amazing Panama Canal.

Variety is also the key to the 'Amazon Explorer & Machu Picchu', a combination of classic natural and historic sites. Six nights on our Amazon River cruise boat takes us into the many tributaries in search of forest wildlife, and even freshwater dolphins. Flying to Cusco, the tour ends with the legendary train ride to the 'lost' Inca city of Machu Picchu.

Cruising with the Tallship Søren Larsen

Under sail in the South Pacific

Our relationship with this delightful sailing ship goes back many years, as she cruises her way around some of the most idyllic locations on earth. The Søren's location over the next year is New Zealand and the islands of the South Pacific.

Every voyage is different, with some 'island Cruising' departures - sailing amongst the turquoise seas and meandering around a group of islands.

Other cruises head across open water, 'Ocean Sailing' to the next location. Plenty of time is spent on land where each island is a paradise to be savoured, by stopping and meeting the friendly local people.
