Japan is a fascinating country of incredible diversity; ultra-modern yet steeped in tradition, it’s a landscape of blazing neon-lit cities, rugged mountains, coasts and valleys.

One of the best ways to get around and explore is by its famously reliable trains including the incredible Shinkansen or ‘Bullet’ train which zooms through the countryside at speeds of up to 300km ph.

Any holiday to Japan should include time in two of its most interesting cities Tokyo and Kyoto. Tokyo’s a great place to encounter 21st century Japan whereas the old Imperial capital of Kyoto is home to almost 2000 temples and shrines.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki are etched on our brains for the most horrific reasons yet a visit to these vibrant and thriving cities which were devasted by atomic bomb is amazingly inspirational.

You can climb iconic Mount Fuji (3776m) if you are feeling intrepid or just view it from the Hakone National Park. It’s also good place to enjoy a traditional Japanese onsen (hot spring bath). Other rural havens include Hokkaido, the Japanese Alps and the fabled ‘ 99 islands’.

And let’s not forget the food and drink. Increasingly popular everywhere Japanese cuisine has to be some of the most flavoursome, healthy and attractive around whilst the Karaoke bar either excites or appals! On your holiday to Japan be sure to sample as much as you can from the ubiquitous sushi bar, steaming bowls of ramen and sublime tempura.
