Adventure Holidays in the Arctic

Adventure holidays in the ArcticThe vast wilderness of the high Arctic is a dramatic region of spectacular scenery and harsh extremes. With itineraries featuring Spitsbergen, Norway, Greenland and Iceland we explore this forbidding remoteness in comfort and safety.

By far the largest wilderness area of Europe, Spitsbergen is only a few hours flight away. It is the largest island of the beautiful Svalbard Archipelago and lies deep within the Polar Circle just 600 miles from the North Pole. This extraordinary land of jagged peaks, glaciers and sweeping tundra is a true Arctic wilderness with only 30 miles of road and 3000 people on an island the size of Ireland. The birdlife is remarkable and sightings of whale, walrus and the polar bear abound in their natural habitat.

We focus on the striking east coast of Greenland – the world’s largest island dominated by a vast ice cap. The dramatic coastline of endless fjords, giant cliffs and snow capped mountains has long been home to the Inuit people while the remains of early settlements tell fantastic stories of mankind’s exploration and settlement in harsh conditions.

Wildlife

We go in search of the elusive wildlife that has adapted to life in the high Arctic such as: polar bears, whales, seals, walrus, narwhal, caribou, reindeer, arctic foxes and millions of seabirds such as guillemots, puffins and kittiwakes.

When to go

The season starts in May/June with springtime cruises around the British Isles then up to Spitsbergen along the Norwegian coast. From June we cruise Spitsbergen, with the sea ice slowly retreating as the summer advances, enabling a circumnavigation of the island by August.
