Comfort Ratings

Roughing it

It's important to us that, when choosing your adventure, you pick one that is right for you. So we've made it as easy as possible for you to make those all-important decisions with our new Comfort ratings.

For some travellers comfort is important, for others discarding day-to-day comforts is part of the adventure! So to help you make the right choice you will find a 'comfort' rating listed for each tour.

These ratings are intended as a guide only: what's 'comfortable' to one person may be 'roughing it' to another, so ratings will always be subjective. Also keep in mind that some tours combine a few nights roughing it with the majority of nights in more comfortable accommodation: in these cases we've taken a broad average across the tour as a whole.

See the tour dossiers for more detail on the level of comfort you should expect form each night stop - please read these carefully before making your choice.

We're also offering more choice and flexibility than ever before with Tailormade Explore, adventures designed by you...

Sometimes the only way to get right off the beaten track is to camp wild with limited facilities. You'll usually need to set up your own tent and help out with camp chores. Challenging but often rewarding too.

Basic comforts

These trips are mainly camping based, but normally at fixed sites with shower and toilet facilities, and with a support crew to help out with camp chores. Sometimes simple village houses and homestays come into this category too.

Fairly Comfortable

Typically staying in authentic local-style accomodation - from local guesthouses and pensions to simple family-run hotels. Some nights of supported camping may still be involved, but overall these tours allow you to get off the beaten track whilst keeping a reasonable level of comfort.

Comfortable

Using good quality (preferably smaller and family run) hotels, lodges or guesthouses. There may be camping, but at comfortable fixed camps with hotel-style facilities. To allow us to get off the beaten track we may occasionally spend a night or two in simpler accomodation.

In Style

These tours combine active and adventurous days with more indulgent nights! Staying in more comfortable hotels (normally 4 star or above) you can expect higher levels of comfort and service. Find out more about In Style adventures.
