LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Miroslav Janotka (Slovakia)

Miro's knowledge of and enthusiasm for his country are outstanding. Feedback from his groups also suggests that he assesses what the travellers want and structures his information accordingly.

Nkosi Sibanda (Botswana)

A font of local knowledge - for flora, fauna, local culture and everything in between. Perhaps Nkosi's best attribute is his ability to convey his wisdom with a ready smile and enthusiasm. A very popular tour leader.

ORGANISATONAL SKILLS

Sudarshan KC (Nepal)

In spite of recent difficulties in Nepal, Sudarshan made his trips run remarkably smoothly. A frequently used abbreviation in Nepal, 'KC' stands for Khattri Chhetri - a Hindu community renowned for its administrators and soldiers. Su is also a committed environmentalist.

Nick Umpleby (UK)

Nick has worked Explore for 14 months, and in this this time he seems to have crammed in several years' worth of travel experience, from Ethiopia's Simien Mountains to Croatia, Turkey and Syria - always resolving issues effortlessly and cost effectively.

Wael Wanas (egypt)

A firm favourite destination for Explorers, Egypt demands clockwork accuracy from the Tour Leader. Wael delivers with minimal fuss, sorting out local suppliers, donkeys or trains with ease. A former member of Egypt's national basketball team and (for good measure) the Special Forces.

PEOPLE SKILLS

Karina Berg (UK)

Feedback from both customers and agents points to the fact that Karina loves being around people and working with them, with a warmth of character that has helped her to run smooth, successful tours - from South America, where she became fluent in Spanish, to China.

Kannicha Passonpakornkij [Kathy] (Thailand)

A great socialiser both with the group and individually, nothing is ever too much trouble for Kathy: 'I've had the most fantastic time - this isn't just a job; it's the experience of a lifetime, and I'm always looking forward to the next trip.'

Laura Stone (UK)

Beyond her considerable local knowledge and organisational ability, Laura has an infectious humour and the ability to make people truly enjoy their holiday. 'Life as a Tour Leader is never dull: being in North Korea when they tested a nuclear missile has to be one of the quirkier highlights!'

RESPECT FOR LOCAL PEOPLE

Lucien de Silva (Sri Lanka)

Lucien has led tours in Sri Lanka for the last 27 years and his passion for his own country is as fresh as ever. Though gently spoken, Lucien is renowned for sharing his understanding of Sri Lanka's culture and people, and many of his customers have returned to the island for more.

Denise McAvinia (UK)

Denise is a solid tour leader and her respect for the local people is often commented on, and this is clear from the affection they hold for her, in return. 'I have a treasure chest of memories that I hold from each tour - and take out every now and then just to remind myself how lucky I am.'

David Short (UK)

When Dave returns after a series of tours, he leaves many friends behind - so much so that he often likes to go back to work in the same region. 'Historical sites and beautiful landscapes are a plus, of course, but meeting and getting to know the local people really brings a destination alive.'
