The place that I’ve completely fallen in love with is Mantanani Island in Borneo. I volunteered in Borneo for two months and spent two weeks on Mantanani Island where I taught in its school, helped with some eco-projects and learned to dive. When I arrived at the island by boat I completely taken aback, it was like stepping into a scene from a postcard. There’s only a small community that live on the island; there are no roads, only sand and trees; and only a handful of divers visit it a week – it’s just like paradise.
Next on my list has to be New Zealand. I went there a few years ago but it was only for a week - everyone said I was mad for travelling all that way for seven days but I couldn’t turn the opportunity down. It ended up being the best decision I’ve ever made! New Zealand completely blew me away and I’d really like to go back to see more of it, especially the South Island – I only got to spend one night there last time. I’ll defiantly allow for a longer trip next time!
If you asked me for my best piece of travel advice I’d say ‘pack as lightly as you can’. Although it’s hard to even follow my own advice, there’s nothing worse than lugging around a heavy bag that’s full of things you won’t actually use. I sometimes over pack because I worry that I won’t be able to get hold of things abroad, such as toiletries. But it’s never the case. You’ll always end up coming across a shop that sells what you need, and if they don’t sell it – it probably means that you could easily get by without it.
