Without a doubt my favourite place in the world is Alaska: the great outdoors, wonderful, snowy mountain backdrops and wildlife to rival any Africa safari. I was lucky enough to spend a summer there leading Explore tours and out of all the places I worked this is the one I’d go back to in a heartbeat. The people are so friendly, but it’s the nature and wildlife that make Alaska special. I would recommend going early in the season just after the snow-melt as there are fewer mosquitos and a good chance of seeing bears as they come out of hibernation.

The next place I’d like to go is the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq. I have travelled a lot in the Middle East and love its food, people and rich history. I would love to travel to Kurdistan to see the great Islamic sites for myself, including the oldest continually inhabited city in the world.

Whenever I travel I take ear plugs and an eye mask, as you never know what noise or light pollution you may want to block out. They come in handy on planes, long bus journeys or noisy hotels. It’s amazing how much more you enjoy travelling if you’ve been able to have a good night’s sleep!
