My favourite place in the world?  Northern Pakistan. The views from the Karakorum Highway are just spectacular and the villages perched up in the side valleys are out of this world. I can’t wait for the Foreign Office to relax their travel advice to this region. Meanwhile though I’d love to get the chance to travel to Sudan or to Northern Iraq.

Wherever I’m travelling in the world I always take my Sunderland hat. No matter where you go, football is a universal language. That hat has opened up so many conversations.

If I was asked for a single piece of travel advice I’d say be adventurous – choose restaurants frequented by locals, rather than tourists, and try searching for places off the beaten track. In my experience the best and most lasting memories are the unexpected surprises that ‘just happen’ when you try being a bit more adventurous!
