Mainland Spain has so much more to offer the adventure seeking active family who want to have fun and spend time together, rather than take a traditional holiday in a resort with a kid’s club. Choose from mountainous northern Spain or the rolling hills of the south depending on the activities you enjoy most or are keen to try, and discover that Spain is so much more than just sun, sea and sand.
The terrain of the northern mountain range of the Pyrenees lends itself to adventurous activities. The spectacular scenery of the Aigues Tortes National Park with its white-water rivers as well as stunning hiking country made up of craggy peaks, waterfalls and shimmering mountain lakes makes for an awesome natural adventure playground. Watersports abound through the year – ensuring those who dare have exhilarating days getting wet and wild rafting on the rushing rapids of the Noguera Pallaresa River. Not exciting enough? Then the challenge is to go it alone in an open kayak and, if you are brave enough, really get the adrenaline flowing with a spot of canyoning! Pack a swimsuit, a sense of adventure and a good sense of humour. And most of all be prepared to get wet.
By contrast the Andalucian hills in southern Spain in the heart of the Sierra Aracena Natural Park offer a wide variety of slightly gentler activities. Walk between quaint traditional white-washed villages on trails that pass through chestnut groves, and try your hand on an exciting downhill mountain biking trail which wizzes you through picturesque countryside to the shores of an expansive mountain lake. When not hoofing it over the hills or holding on tight on your bike then you can enjoy views from Moorish castle ruins, keeping an eye out for the enemy at all times! And that’s not all, as you can explore an extensive and fascinating cave system entering an alien world full of stalagmites, stalactites and all manner of weird and wonderful rock formations.
