Travellers visiting the city may like to cycle on to Konigstein
Dresden is a "fine city" to explore as part of a cycling holiday, as the scenery it is possible to see while riding along the Elbe is extraordinary.
That is the opinion of Jeanette Schuchmann, the deputy director of the German National Tourist Office, who noted that the castles in Dresden are rightly lauded as some of the finest in Europe.
"[Visiting Dresden is] an opportunity to experience a very fine city," she said.
"The town itself, and also the countryside, is a real treasure trove for excursions along the Elbe by bike, experiencing the scenery and castles along the way."
People planning a cycling holiday to Dresden may wish to extend it to take in nearby Konigstein and travel on to the Czech capital, Prague.
The 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup is currently being held in Germany, with Dresden's Gluckgas Stadium playing host to a variety of games, including one of the tournament's quarter finals.
