Fort Jesus is a 'monumental' attraction

Although it is Kenya's second largest city, Mombasa, prides itself on its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the country's tourism board has said.

Kenya Tourist Board recently released figures showing that United Kingdom arrivals for the whole first quarter of 2011 revealed an increase of over ten per cent, compared to last year.

Angie Sloan, the UK director Kenya Tourist Board, said that the city has a few attractions which cannot be missed by people on adventure holidays.

"Fort Jesus is a must-see attraction in Mombasa, it was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and served as a transit point for the slave trade," she said.

"Its monumental architecture is steeped in history and the fort houses a museum, displaying a selection of interesting artefacts from its past."

Others attractions that draw people on adventure holidays to Kenya include the national parks such as Maasai Mara, which is great for those planning safari trips.
