Malaga is a 'little treasure', ideal for hiking holidays

The city's history is fascination and stretches back centuries

Malaga offers more than just the surrounding beach resorts, according to the city's tourism organisation.

Antonio Montejo Romero, who is a spokesperson for Malaga City Tourist Board and Convention Bureau, noted that the area is not as well known as Barcelona or some Spanish islands, but is a "little treasure".

He added that Britons say they are going to Malaga, when really they are just going to the Costa del Sol, and have never experienced the city itself.

Particularly impressive is Malaga's fascinating history, that stretches back hundreds upon hundreds of years - and is ideal to explore on a hiking holiday through the old Moorish trails and beyond.

"We're talking about our wonderful momentous heritage from Romans, the catholic kings and the Jewish times," Mr Romero said.

"We have a Roman amphitheatre for example which dates in the first century before Christ, which is completely restored. And also we're talking about Alcazaba, dating from the 11th century."
