Matterhorn is one of the 'most iconic' landmarks in the world

Britons who are planning to take an adventure holiday to experience nature at its finest do not have to travel far from home, according to a Lonely Planet author.

Vivek Wagle, who is the head of editorial at Lonely Planet Digital, noted that the Matterhorn mountain, located near the village of Zermatt, Switzerland, is one of the world's "greatest natural wonders".

The travel expert chose seven natural wonders in the world from the shortlist of 28 put forward by the New Seven Wonders Project - and the Matterhorn was Europe's sole representative on the list.

Mr Wagle said that the mountain is "one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, despite geological shifts".

People who want to visit the Matterhorn could take an adventure travel tour guided by a qualified international mountain leader. The more adventurous could even climb the Breithorn, which towers 4,164 metres over Zermatt.
