Travellers looking to visit Venice on a solo holiday should try and locate accommodation on the mainland in order to keep costs low, according to the organisational body for the destination.
A press office spokeswoman at the Municipality of Venice noted that areas such as Mestre, Marghera and Chioggia were good places to stay, as it means people can travel to Venice Island on public transport.
Talking about the effect that the planned bed tax will have on the city, the spokeswoman said: "It is too early to judge the impact of the tax as it will be introduced on August 24th.
"The amount of the tax varies according to the category of the hotel, the season and the location. Maximum tax will be five euros for five-starred hotels in high season, but could be much less according to category of hotel and distance from the centre," she added.
Figures recently released by STR Global show that Venice reported an occupancy increase of 20.5 per cent last month.
