Dubrovnik also has some of the best food 'in the world'

The Croatian city of Dubrovnik is an ideal destination for people planning solo holidays, according to the city's promotional body.

Romana Vlasic, who is manager of the Dubrovnik Convention and Incentive Bureau, noted that the destination, despite being a major city, has the overall feel of a town to it.

"It's a small city, about 60,000 inhabitants living there currently," she said.

"There are many events throughout the year. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is one of the most important events. This year it will be the 62nd time [it is held]."

Ms Vlasic also noted that Dubrovnik attracted visitors due to its long history, having the whole city under UNESCO protection, and its food, saying that oysters from the destination are "the best in the world".

Jadranka Kosor, the Croatian prime minister, told Reuters last week that the country's economy is set to grow this year, due in part to an especially strong summer tourist season.
