Gambia adventure travellers should visit 'mysterious' stone circle

Those planning an adventure holiday to the west African nation of Gambia should see a mysterious rock formation.

Marie Javins, writing in Wanderlust magazine, noted that the Wassu Stone Circles are an impressive and unexplained sight, located in the smallest country on the continent.

"The Wassu Stone Circles [are] an ancient archaeological site not entirely unlike a mini-Stonehenge, about 20 kilometres northwest of Janjanbureh," she said.

Ms Javins also noted that the explanations for the stones are also something of a mystery, much like the Wiltshire formation to which they are compared.

Her guide told the travel writer: "No one knows why these are here. Some people have studied [them], but not many. Maybe they are burial sites."

The travel expert has written many books on travel and adventure holidays, such as Bragging Rights: Antarctica, and has contributed to travel guides Make the Most of Your Time on Earth and Journeys of a Lifetime.
