People planning family activity holidays should ensure they take out insurance to cover their medical expenses if nothing else, according to a travel expert.
Stuart Bensusan, who is co-founder and head of sales for Essential Travel, a company which offers solutions for travel extras such as insurance and car hire, noted that medical bills can get very expensive abroad.
"To give an example, in Spain, [medical bills for] a broken leg will range between £4,000 and £8,000. For a family policy for a week in Europe which is going to cost between £30 and £40, then it's worth covering," he said.
Mr Bensusan added that if families have a bigger budget available, he would recommend that they get cover for "cancelation, baggage and also if they are going to do sports, the additional premium".
His comments come after research by Essential Travel revealed that 40 per cent of holidaymakers indulge in water sports activities abroad without checking if they have adequate insurance first.
