Delhi 'bombards' the traveller with 'colours sounds and smells'
E-mail Print

Sensory bombardment is almost overwhelming, but 'wonderful'

People planning to take a solo holiday to Asia should contemplate visiting India, and particularly the city of Delhi, which is a "unique" destination.

Kitty Dimbleby, who was writing about her experience travelling to India in the Daily Mail, noted that, after landing in the city, she was hit by a huge range of sensory experiences.

"[Delhi] hits you with an assault on the senses, operating at its own unique pace, with its own unspoken rules. Streets bustle with donkeys, unattended cows, overloaded bicycles and cars full to the brim with myriad arms, legs and smiling faces," she said.

"Colours, sounds and smells bombard the virgin visitor. Women in bright saris, street stalls selling spices, food cooked by the roadside, tuk tuks belching foul fumes, a constant cacophony of sirens, people chatting, calling out."

Despite the almost overwhelming abundance of sounds, sights and smells on show when you touch down in Delhi, Ms Dimbleby said that she and her husband "fell in love" with the destination within hours.
