Enjoy a quick 'snap year' with solo holidays in South Africa

While not all students can afford to take full gap years, a shorter trip of four to five weeks, or 'snap year' as such trips have become known, on cycling holidays to South Africa could be a great way to spend a month or two.

People choosing to cycle the Cape will be able to take in such amazing views as Table Mountain and the Swartberg pass at Oudtshoorn, as well as enjoying rides through the beautiful vineyards of Stellenbosch.

Beyond this though, students will also be able to boost their CVs, with travel guide expert Lonely Planet highlighting the benefits that a "two-wheeled snap year" can bring to young adults' job prospects in later life.

Tom Hall, travel editor at the website, explained: "You need get up and go, stamina and plenty of powers of organisation to pull something like this off and it will prove an unforgettable experience.

"East and south Africa are great places for a cycling odyssey, with plenty of opportunities to get off the beaten track," he suggested.

Mr Hall also highlighted the fact that employers looking to take on young graduates will look at such travel included on CVs as a demonstration of candidates' ability to act independently and motivate themselves.
