Intensely historical nation is home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Travellers planning to take an adventure holiday should consider travelling to the nation of Sri Lanka, as its fascinating history makes for a trip "steeped in heritage", according to the country's tourism board.
Sri Lanka Travel, which aims to promote travel and tourism to the Indian Ocean island nation, said that many of the most popular attractions in the country are related to its long and interesting history.
"With a history that dates back over 2,000 years, Sri Lanka is home to some of the best preserved Asian monuments and showcases no fewer than eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, all remarkably preserved," the organisation noted.
"To this day Sri Lanka's centuries old heritage lives on, in the culture and the way of life of the Sri Lankan people. The rich tapestry of cultural practices and beliefs … revives this Island nation's historic ties."
Despite being located in the intensely historical country, Sri Lanka's capital city, Colombo, is a bustling metropolis that is ideal for people who enjoy cultural attractions such as galleries and museums.
