The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of New Zealand's top one-day hikes
Holidaymakers booking activity breaks in New Zealand will find a great one-day walk if they head to the Tongariro National Park.
The World Heritage site boasts a number of trails for hikers of all abilities, including the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
Setting off from the National Park Village, this trek offers a truly alpine experience, particularly during the winter months.
One of New Zealand's best one-day hikes, it takes in everything from meadowlands to mountain summits, offering breathtaking natural scenery throughout.
It takes about eight to nine hours to complete the walk, which will also see hikers traversing through craters and pumice, past volcanoes and mountain springs, according to the National Park.
The organisation operating the site also draws attention to the impressive peaks of Mount Tongariro, Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngauruhoe, which served as the imposing Mount Doom in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was filmed in New Zealand.
