Those looking to book family activity holidays may want to head for Sri Lanka to pay a visit to the country's elephant population.
The first ever nationwide survey of Sri Lanka's elephants has found that there is a population of upwards of 5,800 on the island.
Carried out last month, the survey found that there were 5,879 wild elephants, including 122 tuskers – males with tusks – and 1,107 calves.
According to the wildlife department's director general, HD Ratnayake, the previous population estimate was 5,350 and so the inital survey results are good news.
"These statistics show that Sri Lanka's elephants are in good health and that their population is growing," he said.
The data gathered by conservationists will now be used to draw up plans to ensure the elephants are best protected.
A team of around 4,000 including farmers and locals were involved in the three day project that saw those involved gather at 1,500 locations where the elephants come to drink water.
