Burma taking small steps towards change
E-mail Print

Signs of a more open government are appearing to show.

Travellers looking to enjoy adventure holidays in Burma will be interested to hear of recent events in the country.

Pro-democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi has published her first article in the Burmese media for 23 years on the front page of People's Era News Journal.

The article about her recent trip to Bagan was given the greenlight by the Press Scrutiny and Registration Division under the Ministry of Information and is a huge moment for the country and Aung San Suu Kyi alike.

Further to this, the Rangoon-based publication Messenger Journal published an interview with Suu Kyi about her views on the Burmese youth, according to an editor of the journal who spoke exclusively to mizzima.com.

The publication of these articles comes just a few weeks after the she met with the president in mid-August.

A further sign of progress in the nation includes the return of banned UN special reporter on human rights, Tomas Quintana.

After a year's absence from the country he was granted a meeting with Suu Kyi during his visit and met with Burma's civil society leaders in Rangoon.

While these may represent small steps for the nation, positive political change in Burma appears to be gathering pace.
