Machu Picchu becoming 'increasingly popular' for hiking holidays

The Peruvian attraction 'feels off the beaten track'

Travellers looking for distinctive hiking holidays may wish to travel to one of the most famous destinations in Peru and the world.

A spokesperson for ABTA - The Travel Association said that Machu Picchu, which is based in the Urubama Valley in the South American Country, is becoming an "increasingly popular" travel destination.

The spokeswoman for the organisation, which represents over 6,000 travel agencies throughout the British Isles, said the reason for this may be the area's perceived seclusion.

"Places like Machu Picchu in Peru. A lot of Peru feels [like it is] off the beaten track, although it has become increasingly popular," she said.

"[Generally,] we have found that South American destinations and Latin American destinations have become more popular."

Machu Picchi is a 15th-century Inca site which was named on a list of New Seven Wonders of the World after a poll carried out by the Swiss government-owned New7Wonders Foundation.
