People who are interested in taking short haul solo holidays may wish to consider the relatively little-known Croatian city of Zadar.
According to Andrew Eames, although the Adriatic port city is "off the radar for most Britons" but is a perfect location for a solo holiday, as it is "honest and unpretentious".
On travel website Trip Ideas, Mr Eames also wrote a little about the island's history; a much sought-after strategic point, Zadar was invaded my many armies.
However, this historical weakness is a strength for the traveller. The constantly changing rulers mean that it is possible to see "the hotchpotch of styles from its invaders."
Mr Eames wrote: "Downtown was a mix of Roman rubble, Romanesque cathedral, narrow-laned Venetian trading port, Austro-Hungarian villa resort and Sixties communist urbanisation."
As well as enthralling - if slightly spasmodic - architecture, the city of Zadar is known as the home of the Croatian Theatre House, the National Museum, the Archaeological Museum and many more cultural attractions.
