Former-Blue Peter presenter praises Syria's castles

Travellers on an adventure holiday in Syria could be transformed back in time when exploring the ruins of ancient civilizations.

Valerie Singleton, former Blue Peter presenter, wrote for tripideas.co.uk that in Syria travellers can retrace the footsteps of historical figures such as Anthony and Cleopatra.

Those on an activity holiday in Syria can explore the colourful and tempting souks in the cities of Damascus and Aleppo, two of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.

These sell spices, scarves, carpets, jewellery and olive oil soap among other things.

Ms Singleton also recommended the Krak des Chevaliers, which guards the surrounding landscape.

She wrote: "One of the best preserved Crusader fortifications in the country, it is a castle within a castle, with thick walls and long passageways to allow horses to enter.

"Further inside, arched, cavernous vaults reached up to battlements and a terrific view."

The most popular time to travel to Syria is during the spring or the autumn when days are sunny and warm.
