'Awe-inspiring' Taj Mahal makes Agra a top destination
E-mail Print

The inside is just as good as the magnificent exterior

Visitors to India may wish to take a solo holiday to Agra, the home of the "awe-inspiring" Taj Mahal.

A supplement on the top 50 cultural destinations in the Sunday Telegraph placed the city, based on the banks of the river Yamuna, at number one.

The contributor said that the Taj Mahal is "just as Rudyard Kipling described it: 'The Ivory Gate through which all good dreams come through'".

As well as the beautiful exterior of the famous mausoleum, the inside of the building is equally "awe-inspiring".

Agra, which is in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, contains three United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites: the Taj Mahal, the Agra Fort and the "ghost city" of Fatehpur Sikri.

The area also boasts the city of Vrindavan, where Lord Krishna is said to have spent his childhood. In commemoration of this, the city has around 4,000 temples.
