People hoping to go on activity holidays in Egypt should contemplate visiting Alexandria, a city which an online magazine has called "a modern wonder".
Susan Hack, writing for the National magazine's website, said the Egyptian town has a fascinating history and is undergoing a modern "cultural revival".
The city still has great "Greco-Roman ruins … [that] are all easily visited in a single morning and are seldom crowded", which is one bonus of visiting the port town over the more busy areas of Cairo, Luxor and Aswan.
Ms Hack recommended visiting the Alexandrian museums to see the work of Alexandrian Mahmoud Said. Who was "an aristocrat who trained as a lawyer began painting Rousseau-like scenes of rural Egyptian life in his fifties".
In its past, Alexandria has been a Greek and a Roman colony. In more recent years, it is known as a seaport that brings in approximately 80 per cent of the country's imports and exports.
