The area's lakes offer a tranquillity rarely found
A travel writer has recommended that people looking for solo holiday ideas visit the Indian region of Kerala and its lakes in particular.
Johnny Morris - writing in Ultravel, a Daily Telegraph holiday supplement - said that lakes in the southern Indian state are peaceful and beautiful.
Although he warns that much of the region - the roads, for instance - can be "chaotic", the lakes have their own "well ordered rhythm".
"Motorboats and kettuvallams have to moor by 5pm to allow the fishermen to set their nets in the brackish water," he said.
"Peace prevails as the sun sets over the bottle-green surface of the lake and the only sounds I can hear are cries of terns and cormorants."
People planning solo holidays to Kerala should also sample some of the areas fine cuisine, which includes a lot of seafood, such as spiced paddy-field prawns spiced with ginger and masala paste.
