People travelling to the Mediterranean should try the 'healthy food'

Nutrition expert says the fruit, vegetables and nuts are 'good for the body'

People taking solo holidays to the Mediterranean should ensure they eat the local food while they are on their trip, as the cuisine is some of the healthiest in the world.

That is according to Carina Norris, a nutrition consultant, who said that the Mediterranean diet characteristics such as fruit, vegetables, nuts and moderate consumption of meat are good for the body.

"Olive oil is a rich source of monounsaturated fats, which have a beneficial effect on our blood cholesterol, and so reduce our risk of heart disease and stroke," she said.

"And oily fish, like mackerel and sardines, are rich in the polyunsaturated fats, known as omega-3 essential fatty acids, which also help with our cholesterol levels."

If people partake in light exercise, such as extensive walking, on a holiday to the Mediterranean, they can enjoy the joys of a trip without the dread of returning home with an expanded waistline.
