Crete 'combines everything' in Greece like nowhere else

Travel writer recommends Hellenic island to people planning hiking holidays

People planning hiking holidays to Greece should consider travelling to Crete because, although it may be best known for its touristy nightlife, it offers plenty to people on adventure holidays.

According to Chris Deliso, who is author of the Lonely Planet guides to Greece and the Greek Islands, Crete combines the best elements of Greece into one region.

So, whether travellers are looking for fantastic vistas, spotless beaches or climbing locations, Crete can give the best Greece has to offer.

"Nowhere else in Greece combines everything the way Crete does. There are sedate traditional villages where time moves at a dependably relaxed rate," Mr Deliso said.

"[But] there are gorgeous beaches and lofty peaks - hiking, canyoning and climbing are all great here and Crete boasts not only some of Greece's most important historical and archaeological spots."

He also recommended that people travelling in Crete try as much of the tasty food as they can and that they "don't leave without bringing home several litres of local olive oil."
