People planning solo holidays to Buenos Aires should not visit the Argentinian capital without taking in one of "the world's greatest bookshops".
That is according to travel guide publishers Lonely Planet, who place the city's Libreria El Ateneo Grand Splendid at number two on their list of the best places to buy books in the world.
Bookshops are a place of special refuge for the solo traveller as, the article notes, "they provide convenient shelter and diversion in bad weather, they're a reliable source of maps, notebooks, and travel guides".
The writer suggests that it is the shops location that makes it one of the most beautiful book shops in the world.
"Occupying a 1920s theatre in downtown Buenos Aires, El Ateneo has kept the sumptuous auditorium's original furnishings - and added books. Beneath the painted ceiling, shelves have been built into the spectator balconies," the article reads.
"When you've finished gawping at the ornate carvings and it's time to put finger to page, the former theatre boxes are now intimate reading rooms."
The writer also recommends the cafe as a refuge for travellers and praises the 24-hour-a-day opening times.
