Snaefellsnes peninsula is also a great attraction

People considering an adventure holiday to Iceland should not miss a visit to the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa, according to the country's tourism board.

Sigga Groa, UK and Ireland area manager for Visit Iceland, noted that the spa was only 40 minutes from the capital, Reykjavik, which is one of the main entry points to the country.

Ms Groa noted that "visitors can go on whale-watching boat tours, super jeep tours to for instance the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, glacier walks, horse-riding through lava fields, snorkelling and diving in the Silfra Fissure and experience the many natural spectacles of Iceland such as the Gulfoss waterfall".

She added that "nature lovers can also visit the Snaefellsnes peninsula which has white and black volcanic beaches, bird cliffs, spectacular mountains and volcanic craters, rich trout lakes and salmon rivers and lush valleys".

Official figures for last month found that British visitors to Iceland rose by five per cent in January 2011, compared to the same month the year before.
