Travellers planning adventure holidays have been urged to express caution when buying travel insurance and to not automatically buy the cheapest one, according to an independent financial research body.
Mike Powell, insight analyst for general insurance at Defaqto, said that each insurance package is suited to some people, but not all.
"You really need to consider, whilst the price is important, that the policy actually covers what you need rather than just taking out the cheapest insurance," he said.
"It's a case of having a look around and don't always buy the cheapest because that could be the most expensive mistake you make."
This is particularly important for those planning an adventure holiday, as many very basic, cheap insurance packages may not cover the activities taking place.
Travel insurance also poses a problem for the older traveller. According to research from insurance provider LV=, one in five travellers aged 65 and over say that getting the correct travel insurance remains a problem.
