Turkey is growing in popularity among British tourists

Tourism board says there has been a ten per cent increase in travel from UK

People planning activity trips may wish to consider Turkey, as the country's popularity has shot up in recent years.

Tolga Tuyluoglu, who is the director in the UK and Ireland of the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office, said that the destination - which is partly in Europe and partly in Asia - has "gone from strength to strength".

The tourism board for Turkey has recently released some statistics that back up Mr Tuyluoglu's claims.

Last year, 28.6 million people visited Turkey from around the world; of this number, 2,673,605 travelled from airports in the United Kingdom. This represents an increase of more than ten per cent on 2009's interest in the country.

"Turkey has gone from strength to strength in the UK market, and has been one of the fastest-growing destinations for British visitors over the past five years," Mr Tuyluoglu said.

One of the most popular attractions in Turkey for people on solo holidays and activity holidays is Istanbul, which melds eastern and western influences.
