Travellers on solo holidays in Mexico must try one of the world's 'iconic dishes'
E-mail Print

Lonely Planet recommends the dish along with Singapore chilli crab and salad Nicoise

Travellers planning solo holidays to Mexico will be able to sample one of top seven "must-eat" dishes in the world, according to Lonely Planet.

Katie Falkiner, writing on the travel guide-producer's website, named a sauce from the Central American country as one of the "iconic dishes" on her "foodie's 'must-eat' checklist".

Among the other dishes on Ms Falkiner's list - including Singapore chilli crab, Nanaimo bars and salad Nicoise - is Mole Poblano.

"This rich, dark sauce typically involves at least 20 ingredients (including assorted chillis and chocolate) and is traditionally served over turkey," she wrote.

"A popular story of its origin involves the nuns of the Convent of Santa Rosa who needed to feed the Archbishop. They were poor but, inspired by an angel, they mixed together different chillis, day-old bread, nuts and chocolate and left it to simmer for hours."

The story goes that the Archbishop fell in love with the sauce dish and Ms Falkiner assures travellers that they will too if they try it on a solo holiday in Mexico.
