Mongolia and China-based desert offers more than arid plains
People planning activity holidays should travel to Mongolia, especially taking in the Gobi Desert, which is a "playground for … adventurers".
That is according to Nigel Richardson, former travel editor of The Daily Telegraph, writing in the newspaper about his activity trip to the desert.
Mr Richardson wrote that the region offers much more than the usual arid image of the place suggests.
"The Gobi is not just sand and gravel … It diversifies into mountains and evergreen forest and geological freak shows – including a dune system as long and high as a mountain range," he said.
"[It also] sustains an array of endangered species that includes wild ass, wild camels and snow leopards."
The Gobi Desert is a huge cold region in Asia (it can reach temperature lows of -47 Centigrade), covering not only southern Mongolia but northern China as well.
The desert was created as the nearby Himalayas block rain-carrying clouds from reaching the area.
