Mothers looking for a break from their families may enjoy a walking holiday abroad

Mums might enjoy looking for walking and trekking holidays, after research suggested that most prefer vacationing without their children.

According to research by Ryanair, 90 per cent of mothers would rather opt for more grown-up holidays than the usual family trips, while 30 per cent would also prefer to leave their husbands at home.

The survery of 5,000 mothers across Europe indicated that 95 per cent prefer not to travel in groups containing other people's children.

Stephen McNamara, a representative for the carrier, said: "Nine out of ten (mothers) aid they would ditch the kids while a third would leave the whole family behind."

The majority of mothers said that they would ask their parents to babysit while they were away, while five per cent would ask a brother or sister and three per cent a neighbour or friend.

Just two per cent would trust their over-16s to stay at home alone.
