Walking charity says correct footwear must be worn

Older adults who aim to improve their fitness levels by going on hiking holidays should ensure that they are appropriately prepared, according to a walking charity.

People planning hiking holidays should already have a generally healthy lifestyle, but the trips can help boost fitness levels if the right footwear is utilised

Maria Castellina, a spokeswoman for Ramblers, said: "When walking, your feet are always key and it's important to have sturdy and supportive footwear suitable for the terrain you're walking on."

Recent research conducted at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital's Institute for Exercise found that walking can increase blood flow through to the brain by as much as 15 per cent for women over the age of 60.

Ms Castellina added: "You should always make sure that you have enough layers of clothing to keep you warm." This advice is particularly important if hiking in a cold or unprotected area.
