More and more people planning solo holidays are becoming wary about the effects travel may have on the planet, according to new research.
Sustainable tourism is on the rise - particularly in Italy - according to a report by Angelo Rossini, who is a tourism market researcher.
Mr Rossini, a leading analyst at Euromonitor International, said that environmentally friendly travel practices are in the rise in the European country, with accommodation providers leading the way.
"The travel and tourism industry in Italy is slowly incorporating "green" practices," he said.
"Most notably, hotels are attempting to reduce carbon emissions by exploring alternative sources of energy and by empowering guests to conserve energy, recycle and cut down on litter."
Hiking holidays are one of the greenest ways to travel, as it does not use carbon dioxide-producing vehicles as a means of locomotion. People who are planning a trekking trip to Italy may like to hike the Dolomites, located in the north-east of the country.
