Vacationers planning trips to India may want to visit the Old Fort, or Purana Oila, while on family package holidays in New Delhi.
One of several Mughal monuments in the city, the fort is said to rest on the ancient site of Indraprastha (900 BC). Legend has it that the buildings in the fort were constructed by Sher Shar, while the giant walls that surround it were built by Humayun.
Some of the most notable buildings still standing in the fort, which covers approximately one square mile, include the Sher Mandal and the Ouila-I-Kholina Mosque.
The Kabuli, or Khuni Darwaza, is another site of interest in Delhi – the great gate, which is literally called the Bloody Gate, was the site of intense fighting between the British and the Mughals in the 19th century, when Delhi was reoccupied.
This is the site where Captain Hudson shot dead three Mughal princes and it stands today as a stark reminder of Delhi's chequered colonial history, opposite the main gate of the Maulana Azad Medical College.
