Mayan ruins are attracting more people to Belize than ever before.
With ancient Mayans prophesising that the world will end in 2012, now may be the time to check out their ancient temples and burial sites while on adventure holidays in Belize.
Maya's 5,125-year Long Count Calendar is due to end on December 21st, 2012, and people are becoming much more interested in the ancient civilisation as this date approaches.
Yanick Dalhouse, director of marketing for the Belize Tourism Board, said as much, explaining that ten per cent more people visited Belize, which houses many of Maya's ruins, in 2010 than in the previous year.
But while fans of Indiana Jones may want to go off on their own in search of the treasure while on adventure holidays in Belize, she suggested a guide might be the best way to go.
"While visitors can do some independent exploring while visiting Maya sites, a tour is often advisable to ensure visitors are able to easily reach sites that are often located far into Belize's untouched landscape," Ms Dalhouse explained.
"Plus, knowledgeable guides can provide in-depth insights into the rich Maya culture, history and usage of the ancient sites, as well as the surrounding area," she added.
Holidaymakers exploring Maya's ancient ruins will also find sites of interest in Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador.
